How to do these simple things

It has been a few years since I used KIcad, and I see there are many changes.
Two things I cannot find how to do.

  1. get rid of the footprint names
  2. where to find Pads.
Probably a very stupid set of questions in most eyes, but please bare with me until I get used to things again.Regards Ernie
  1. On the schematic? Mouse over the symbol and hit “e” for edit. Untick the radio button for visible. If doing more than one part I’ll sort this kind of thing out on the first part and then make copies.

  2. Not sure what you mean on that one.

My answer is for version 5.1, older versions have similar features.

I assume you either work completely without a schematic or added some components manually to the layout. The thing that is pre filled with the footprint name is the value field that would normally be overwritten with whatever you enter in eeschema.

To hide a single value field use the preferences menu of either the footprint or the text field (right click context menu or hotkey “e”)
You can also use the right sidebar and hide values there (in the items tab).

Pads are not added to the layout directly. You need to create a footprint with that pad and add the footprint to your schematic.

Hi thanks for the return, I had just discovered how to remove the component names, should have remembered it. OK for the Pads, I will fiddle with it over the week end.
You are correct I am working without a Schematic, I am copying it from a board I developed in Kicad about 3 years ago, very daunting, but it is only an exercise to help me get up to speed again.
Thanks again Ernie
