How do I report an application issue that prevents me getting the Version number

I have just downloaded, installed and run KiCad 8.04 for the very first time.

Unfortunately, for some reason, the menus are not working… at all. Nothing. Nada. No menus at all.

I have tried to report a bug, but without the version details which can only be get at from the help menu, the KiCad Bot keeps closing the issue.

Can someone suggest a workaroud? Anyone got the current full version number required?

BTW My system is Windows 11 Pro, Version 23H2, OS Build 22631.3880 with Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1020.0
It is a Ryzen 7 5700X with 32Gb ram and a Samsung 980 SSD

Exactly how will depend on your system. On my Mac, see below.

Mac’s info button gets it. Can also look at the Download file - it will show it as will selecting the App and looking at it in file manager

ADDED: I see we posted at same time…
If I had this kind of problem, and I have had them, I would turn Off any Virus protection and Download the file again, then install before turning on Virus protection.

The download file is kicad-8.0.4-x86_64.exe

I tried “kicad-8.0.4-x86_64” in the bug report but the Bot is still rejecting it saying " This issue is missing the required full version information"

This probably won’t help but, checking it on my system in the recommended way, shows below image and you can see there is no additional Version Info beyond ‘Release Build’. Other stuff also displays and may be what you need… I don’t know. I have reported Bug’s with only what I show…

ADDED: Can you boot it up and check ‘About’ from any menu item you see?

Where did you download that KiCad version from?

If all else fails, then write down some text you want in the bug report. Then I can create a bug report for you, paste in your text and add a note that my version info (I’m non Linux) is not correct.

I tried both GitHub and Cern links off the official downloads page

BTW Here is my bug report… I don’t know if others can see it.

I see your posted image.

Try downloading a previous version release, just to see what happens…

I can see it, but it’s “closed”. Without the bot letting you open the issue, there will not be many people seeing your issue. But one would be enough to open your issue manually.

Another thing you can do is search either this forum or gitlab, and then copy & paste the version info from another bug report. If you do a thing like this, then at least mention this clearly in the description and also add a direct link in your bug report to the version you downloaded, and as much real version info of your OS that you can gather.

I can’t reopen the issue because I can’t supply the version information. As soon as I reopen it, the Bot closes it again.

  • Prepare what you want to write in your issue. Put it in a text editor or whatever.
  • Create a new issue, add all relevant info (including version info, link to this forum thread and link to the broken issue to it.) gitlab has a neat way in which linked topics are always linked in two directions.
  • Forget the old issue, just leave it closed. As long as the link is added to the newer issue, nobody will be confused by it.

Installed 8.0.3 x86_64… Same result.
Installed 7.0.11 x86_64… Same result.

At this rate, I’ll end up downloading and rebuilding the source!

“including version info”
And THAT is the problem. Whatever I put in the version info for the issue, the Bot rejects it.

Some minutes ago Mark Roszko opened your issue and he’s now asking for more specific data.

Thankyou for letting me know. I have provided the info he asked for.
