KiCad can measure the hypotenuse length between two points I measured in the figure, but I definitely need to measure the projection lengths on the X-axis and Y-axis.
I would have loved to see this feature in KiCad version 9…

The measurement tool (ctrl+shift+M) displays hypotenuse as well as x and y projections.

Additionally, a long click on the dimension icon in the PCB Editor will open a fly out showing other options for adding a dimension:
