Heads Up: EESchema GAL conversion

Hi,

Starting today, the schematic editor also uses GAL for rendering, so among other things it should be significantly faster on hi-DPI displays.

Obviously this also means more potential for bugs. The last Windows nightly before the switchover is r11329.3024ded91, the new version should arrive later today.

If you find a rendering bug in the schematic editor, please check that you are using a version after the switch, and report bugs in the usual place.

Hi, could you provide more details about your HW configuration and settings of the eeschema (canvas using OpenGL/Cairo, antialiasing settings?)

Sure,

I’m running on an i7 3520m, integrated graphics, 16GB Ram, Debian testing.

Both canvases are slower, the fallback one is closer in performance to the old canvas (better).
In both canvases using Subpixel antialiasing (High Quality). Tried changing to No antialiasing but performance appears to be the same.

Will try if a release build changes anything.

How about “glxinfo” output? It’s really strange that the GL canvas is slower than Cairo.

Im experiencing some weird looks at specific zoom levels.
The text looks kinda fuzzy and different wires/lines, component outlines etc are different thickness.


For instance the outline on R5 is thicker on the left and upper line.

would you know if this is a bad setting or a bug?

Tom has been working on this but the new stuff is currently broken on Mac so I don’t know if it fixes all of your issues. But it should be in the latest nightly.

There was a shader failing to compile on some machines, should be fixed soon.

I’m flipping between two nightlies that I downloaded:
kicad-r11471.9b027628e-x86_64 (Oct10 nightly) and kicad-r11526.0777d1118-x86_64 (2nd Oct14 nightly).

My system is a DELL Precision M4800 with a high-dpi screen (15.5", 3200x1800, with NVIDIA Quatro K2100M adapter), running 64bit Win10 Pro v1803.

On the r11471 build, trying different Graphics acceleration settings, Supersampling (4x) looks the best but the cross-hairs lags behind my mouse pointer making that unusable. Switching down to Supersampling 2x, it looks second best and the crosshairs (I use full screen) keeps up with the pointer. Here is a screenshot of the Supersampling (2x), note the plot (imported bmp file) looks good but there is a variance in the pin width on the “chip” object (actually an arduino pro mini, but that isn’t important) specifically 15 is thinner than the rest and A7 is lighter color. That said, I have to look carefully to find these issues.

On the r11526 build the imported image doesn’t show at all (I can select it to edit it). The grid seems heavier. The missing lines on the graphics acceleration for the no aliasing and the two subpixel antialiasing settings are worse with much more borders of background-filled symbols randomly vanishing at different zoom levels. Here is the best setting (quality and performance) of Supersampling (2x) of a similar section of the schematic. Pin A6 looks thicker than the rest, and pin A4 looks lighter than the rest. And the grid looks more like little crosses than the dots that I have configured.

Also, compare the J2 connector from the r11526 to this rendering of the same connector in the r11471 build. Note the change of handling of the fill on the arc. (This symbol is directly from the standard libraries.)

Is the r11526 build starting to get some potentially unstable additions targetted past 5.0.1 (or even 5.0.2 or 5.1)? Should I wait for 5.0.1 stable to see if there is a bitmap viewing issue before submitting a bug report? Or should I bug report the missing bitmap?

I see the windows install package for 5.0.1 is available. I’ll download and install it at home tonight and double check this file.

Ok, I guess the nightlies are ahead of 5.0.1. No EESchema GAL.

The nightlies will become 5.1. The 5.0.x releases don’t really have nightlies. But at least for windows there are regular test releases for them.

Oh, ok. When I get a chance I’ll check the nightlies again and start submitting bug reports on rendering.
