I somehow have cleverly set kicad 7 so that when I hover over one component in the pcb board, it selects them all and I can’t just move one.

I somehow have cleverly set kicad 7 so that when I hover over one component in the pcb board, it selects them all and I can’t just move one.
Nothing gets selected by just hovering, so I assume you also clicked on something or pressed one of the hotkeys.
Possibly you made a group of some footprints (or other items). Try this: Right Click and then from the context menu: Grouping / Ungroup Items.
Not really quite sure what I did. I would press g and then click on a footprint and then everything would move. I finally ened poking some button and things went back to normal. Not sure what I poked that time or what I poked previously. I had been setting up edge cuts. Unfortunately my tutorial is for Kicad 6 (probably) and the interface has changed.
