Preamble:
I installed KiCad 7 last year - went through a Digikey 555 timer tutorial for it (very good) - and then made my first board in 20+ years. All went well. I now just installed KiCad 8, going through same tutorial for a refresh, but having an issue with seeing footprints on the PCB.
Issue:
When I “Update PCB from Schematic” I see the lines connecting footprints, but I see no visible footprints.
all components have been assigned footprints
there are no errors
all layers are visible
rat-nest lines are visible
if I right click on line where footprint should be, I see properties for footprint
if I try to add footprint manually - I do not see image of footprint in preview
So, kinda weird. I’m thinking some display setting issue, but it is not apparent what…
Some further info:
OSX 12.6.2
Kicad 8.0.4
Kicad 7.0.8 still installed but in different folder
Kicad 7.0.8 does not have issue
projects and libraries are in separate folders outside of Kicad
Turns out if I save the PCB, close it, then open it again, I see the footprints…
They still dont show in preview for manually adding, but if I add, then save, close, open, I see them on pcb.
That is a possibility. I recently also had the PCB editor canvas go blank on me, and it “resolved itself” after a bit of fooling around (zooming, window resize, can’t remember). I was too distracted to investigate further.
I have the same issue. Fresh new installation of KiCad 8.0.4 on Sonoma 14.6.1
Closing/reopening work if you add footprint on schematic.
This happens reliably.
But if you try to add footprint from a library directly to PCB the preview is blank. While 3D view is OK.
