Footprints do not display in pcbnew after Updating PCB from Schematic

I hereby certify that I am not simply asking someone else to design a footprint for me.

This is KiCad 8.0.3

1. I designed a schematic.
2. I assigned footprints.
3. I go into pcbnew and select the “Update PCB from Schematic”. Everything looks good. No errors or warnings.
4. I click on the viewport and the rats nest appears.
5. Issue: I cannot see the footprints - only the rats nest. If I invoke the 3D Viewer I can see the proper footprints rendered into the 3D view. How can I see the foot prints while doing my layout?
