In v7, I would add fields to my footprints and make them visible and put on the silk layer as a way of adding various labels to parts, usually connectors, that would be attached to the parts and follow them around as I moved them around the board.
Having recently upgraded to v8 (yay!), I see that fields are handled differently. For one thing, they have names now as well as values. And you no longer specify the layer the field should display on. My previously defined fields appear on the silk layer where I’d put them in v7 so they migrated successfully but they’re not editable. I can’t select them and they don’t show up when I edit (E) the footprint.
Any suggestion for how I can edit those fields without just deleting the footprint and starting over?
Yup, right clicking on the header row lets me get the layer column back. That makes it easier than what I was doing.
Unfortunately, the fields that I created with v7 and it seems to have imported aren’t shown in the footprint editor so I can’t edit them or even just delete them.
Ah, I was talking about the pop-up window I get when I type E and the list of fields there. If I actually bring up the footprint editor, then I can get to those imported fields and edit them however I wish. That fixes it for me.
