Footprint Editor Default Pads not correct

Hi, I’m a regular Kicad user and have recently migrated from 6 to 7 (actually at 7.0.5-7.0.5~ubuntu20.04.1, release build)
Since migrating, I cannot get the default pad properties to work in the footprint editor. When I try setting the default I want (a through-hole, oval pad) I still get a square smt pad when I click on the “Add a pad” icon. Neither the pad settings icon on the top bar, nor the “Edit, Default pad properties…” sequence seem to do anything. In both cases I set my required pad properties, click on Save - and when I create a new pad it’s STILL an smt pad.
Help, please.

Adding a new pad respects the current set component type, so you have to set the component type first to THT. (doubleclick into empty footprint-space–>footprint properties dialog–>component type==SMD/THT)

Yes! I’d spent hours searching - and forgot the simple things.
I’m back at full speed again.
Thanks!
