Every time I rotate a component in eeschema, I have to rotate the labels manually; they get rotated along with the component.
Has this always been the case or is this a recent regression?

i understand you right?
-> if oyu rotate the component the component labels will rotate with the component.
(they should stay on the same place relative to the component origin-point)
as far as i can remember this has been always the case.
i checked
both versions behaves like this.

This is normal behaviour and not a bug. It’s one of these things where you decide on one way to do it and then 50% of the users will like it as it is and the other 50% will not
The issues is that even a settings will not really help. When you add components to the schematic and move them around while placing them, you really really want to have the labels stick to the component. Then later, this behaviour should change on its own and the labels should not stick any longer on component moves or rotations. You see - it’s a tricky thing…
