“Tools / Edit Symbol Fields…” dialog, the “Reference” column for some rows has the “>” character followed by space before the symbol(s). Why, What is the “>” character indicating?

You can do quite powerfull things with it. For example, suppose you’ve drawn a hobby project with THT components, but have a lot of resistors in an R2R network, and you want to change the footprint of only these resistors to SMD.
Then you can simply use “Group by Value” and use the Footprint Library Browser 
to change only the footprints of the resistors with the same value as the R-2R network.
