Download not working for me [ Sun Nov 18 - 2015 ] - mystery solved

Firefox says: download of 4.0.0 stable will take 16 days and 15 hours,

Something is plain wrong.

Alexandra

Which version/link are you downloading?
Did you do a speed test for your connection to the intertubes?

I just tried http://downloads.kicad.org/windows/stable/kicad-product-4.0.0_rc1-x86_64.exe
And it runs with ~200kB/s (15 mins ETA) in Firefox with the DownThemAll manager…

This is from Far North Queensland, 100km from Cairns on NBN wireless with Telstra

@Joan_Sparky,

well I live closer, Switzerland. Not working on all downloads on

http://downloads.kicad.org/windows/
http://downloads.kicad.org/windows/stable

The problem is not on my side, internet is working fine up and down.

Thanks for the hint with DownThemAll. Same as before.

Still can be your internet problem, Alexandra. It has downloaded in 55 seconds for me (from Hungary).

Anyway I download and switch to latest build from time to time. Should we rather use “stable”?

Afaik (strong IMHO) there is no recent stable that will have most up to date stuff included.
The Release Candiate 4 should be pretty good/safe bet, though.
Just install the latest you can get your hands on and if nothing is broken that you need keep it - that’s at least how I do it (some mild version of “never change a running system”).
I’m also in the middle of doing some stuff, so won’t change horses now
Once that is done I’ll look at RC4 or whatever else is the newest then and try it.

Just found out: It is a FritzBox7390 WLAN problem - works fine wired !

I have two more sites with very slow traffic -
all other sites which I use regularly do work fine on WLAN. / up 5MBs / down 50MBs /

http://downloads.kicad.org/windows/

does show a directory
\stable 13-Sep-2015 12:54

containing
kicad-product-4.0.0_rc1-i686.exe 13-Sep-2015 12:53 200702545
kicad-product-4.0.0_rc1-x86_64.exe 13-Sep-2015 12:54 200389259

That is all I know concerning “stable version”.

I use kicad on 3 notebook with the project directories on a NAS.
CAD / Manufacture / Debug-Measurement

I do not use online kicad data ( libraries and footprints)
I use local copies and modified components and footprints on the NAS.

This works fine, but understanding and changing the Paths was a weekend’s work.

As Joan_Sparky pointed out, there is no stable release as of yet, only a release candidate, nightly builds, and the old stable. Here’s Wayne Stambaugh (lead developer) on the developer’s list:

“This should read “stable release candidate 1” is out. When rcX is
dropped from the version number, then it is officially a stable release.” (October 14, 2015 under “RC1 terminology on the website”)

We really should try to avoid using the terminology “stable release” until it indeed has been released in full.

@jwpartain1

The directory is called \stable
I did not name it

As TO I consider this thread as closed as THE MYSTERY IS SOLVED

I consider any further post about STABLE or NOT STABLE as HIJACKING

Relax dude - you might want to dial down the control freak in you a bit, it’s the internet and a public forum here - no need to get cranky about some sidekick discussion going on in a thread (that has found a solution).
Also, @jwpartain1 addressed me and @novaktamas, not you directly. Nor did anyone imply that you did use the term ‘stable’ in any way inappropriate…
Peace.
