I want to mount a D²PAK (surface mounted ) diode as an I²PAK diode.
Is it possible or not?
I don’t know how big the difference between those two footprints is, but maybe you can use the link below to get an estimation of whether it can work.
Also, it’s easy to modify footprints in KiCad. It may be possible to have either of them fit reasonably well with some small modifications.
Edit I just did a short search for I²PAK and I found this:
In this datasheet:
www.st.com/resource/en/datasheet/stb20n65m5.pdf
So it looks like both are based on a TO220 with a cut of tab. I guess you can make it fit by bending the pins a bit and cutting them to length.
d2pak is just the smd variant with bent leads
I think it depends if in your diode pin 2 is used or not.
In SMD pack it can be used as it has the best heat dissipation.
Two bent, one cut.
it doesn´t use pin 2 and i will mount the tab to a heatsink.
