"Current search path list" => What does this actually do?

Hi,

I’m trying to give KiCAD a go (I’m mostly familiar with Altium and Diptrace) and I’m trying to add custom schematic libraries which I made to my project. In the EESchema Preferences->Component Libraries window, it has a box containing the “Current search path list”, and my library is saved into a folder in this list. However, it doesn’t show up in the list of available libraries. I realise I can just hit the add button and add each library separately, but then what does the current search path list actually do? Shouldn’t it automatically import libraries from the current search path list ?

Thanks,
Jeremy

It’s an outdated GUI.
You have to have the path in that list, before you can add the library itself… I didn’t try to understand it 2 years ago when I started with KiCAD and I certainly don’t want to start now

With v5 it will work and feel more like the contemporary footprint system - hopefully.
The current nightlies already have some hooks for the ‘symbol library table system’ implemented…

PS: whoever is doing that work, kudos! :+1:

Yes v5 will include the symbol lib table similar to the footprint lib table.
This feature is the reason why v5 has not yet been released.
