StepUp has also an option to create a bounding box shape of some (filtered) of the imported STEP models.
My two cents: When I have to occasionnaly do that, I use an approach similar to paulvdh’s one except that the base board is a cheap predrilled proto board from eBay and I don’t solder the headers to the proto board. Rubber bands are used instead
I have done this and it worked really well. I then continued the idea by putting pieces of varying thicknesses of weatherstripping (foam with an adhesive backing) where I had shorter THT components such as trimpots and pushbuttons to help hold them in place. This made pretty quick work of each board.
