Why is there no default hotkey for Finish Wire/Bus? It’s a function which is applicable to pretty much every user.
Why do you think there is no such thing?
For me, the [End] key works.
and again, looking at Preferences / Preferences / Hotkeys and then searching for “wire”, shows:
And it turns out that k also works for me. I never used that one before.
On macOS, the internal keyboard technically has a hidden Home and End button in the form of fn+leftArrow and fn+rightArrow, respectively, but ANSI and ISO standard preclude external keyboards from recognizing the fn key as a standard key.
On the Logitech K780 bluetooth keyboard, for example, there is an fn key which has NOTHING to do with the macbook internal keyboard. Instead it just has unmodifiable macros which (frustratingly) do not correspond to the default behavior of the default keyboard fn key. (The Home and End buttons are not accessible through the NumPad either, as NumLock isn’t recognized).
To that effect: There is no guaranteed option to use Insert/Home/End functions.
Could the Insert/Home/End/PageUp/PageDn hotkeys find suitable alternatives on the macOS version of KiCad?
I never used End or K for it. I used double click to finish wire.
Why does the hotkey not appear in the right-click menu?
I guess because the menu item is not Finish Wire or Bus
:
“k” works every time for me. Can’t get much easier than that.
It seems you’re stuck in a previous software world and want KiCAD to behave just like that.
From above, it turns out, there are 3 functions:
Finish Bus
Finish Wire
Finish Wire or Bus
The program does not allow the same hotkey for multiple functions, or it at least chewed me out for trying to make K
the hotkey for the first two when K
was already the hotkey for an existing function. I’m guessing that this is the reason that a third function Finish Wire or Bus
was created — so the two could share the same hotkey.
But as this is neither exactly Finish Bus
nor exactly Finish Wire
, they appear to have no hotkey from the glance at the associated right-click menus (shown above).
.
What was not said above is that now that I know K
is the hotkey, I’ll make use of it. Also, the double-click that I just saw above; thank you all involved.
I’m surprised Finish Wire or Bus
isn’t the listed function. When would Finish Wire or Bus
be inappropriate for either?
It may be something that just slipped through the cracks. Maybe some new thing was added by a developer, and he either did not dare (yet) to remove the old, or it was forgotten later.
Maybe there is some good reason to keep it (for now) but we just don’t know the reason.
Computers are quite exact, but the software is still developed by humans, and those are quite often mysterious creatures.
When you are drawing wire then what “Finish Wire or Bus” means? Are you sure that it is your wire to be finished or may be some bus somewhere
I am using KiCad since 4.0.7 (2017) and I didn’t know that there are hotkeys for finishing drawing wire, finishing drawing bus and finishing drawing both of them.
If you add to list also hotkey for finishing drawing connected graphic lines and hotkeys for all possible combinations of two of them (+ full set - all three) than you reach full satisfaction of all users.
For me existing of these hotkeys has no sense (makes only unneeded mess) if double-click works for all of it since always. When drawing you use mouse so you have double click closer to you than any keyboard hotkey.
May be these hotkeys were added for touch pad users. I have never used to use touch pad so I don’t feel what is needed - is there equivalent for double click that you can do without unintended moving at the same time the cursor?
Update : My quality of life has improved since double-clicking to finish wires and buses became known to me. Thank you, community; I was entirely unaware.
