Newby question of the day. Does anyone know what a Conn breakaway retainer is for? It came with some JST connectors. Little black pieces of plastic. Thanks!

You mean the TPA retainer ? (TPA = Terminal position assurance). Like the one below ?
They make sure that none of your contacts comes out when you apply force to it.
