Take some time to research the Appearance panel at the right side, including the Objects tab. I think you will find the right combination of layer and object visibility.

You might have turned on the high-contrast mode (the ‘H’ hotkey). It greys out or disables all the inactive layers. You can see which layer is active in the appearances tab.
