Is there a way to, like in EasyEDA, Altium Designer and maybe others, a way to simply drag a component (in both schematics and PCB) when moving the mouse over it and click it (do it all with just one click with the left mouse button)? Is it a setting for this?
No.
Easiest in Kicad is to hover mouse over the item and press G.
As you probably know you can select an item with a LMB or RMB (plus additional click) click then hold down LMB to drag.
If you have nothing selected and press the m or g key (or m and d in pcb editor). The system falls back to old style gui if you don’t initiate selection. This is one of the usability downsides of more mainstream select to manipulate user interface.
Its a calculated tradeoff not seeing them ever going back on this honestly.
Thanks jmk but the “g” only seems to work in the schematics.
You’re right. G only works on tracks, not footprints. Footprints are left click select followed by left button hold-down.
Yeah, it’s about getting it simple, to get a faster, consistent workflow without too many side tracks.
The default behavior requires you to select the item first. However, you can change this in preferences:
Great, craftyjon, this setting works as it’s supposed to in the schematics and in the PCB editor it almost works, though when we have click-dragged a thing we have to click somewhere (or press the esc key) before click-dragging the next thing. Hm, why do they behave different?
Well, click-drag a wire in schematics doesn’t work either with this setting…
… as well as the long ago mentioned issue with logical tab order in different parts of this application, seems to be a lack of a communication/consistency plan here between different parts…
