Choose Symbol dialog not showing symbols

When I open the Choose Symbol dialog, it tells me it has 418 symbols loaded. If I click around in the selection pane, the symbols are there and selectable and I can add them to schematics, but they do not show up in the panel so I’m basically selecting blindly. This is the the case whether or not I type anything in the (visible!) Filter bar. Does anyone know how to get the parts to show up? They used to be there, and I have no idea what happened.

Running KiCad 9.0.4. Have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

That dialog rendering looks quite broken… Can you post your full version info please?

You bet.

Update: if I drag the window to another screen, the names show up but the rendering is still wrong. Vaguely more usable, I suppose.
