Can't find symbol libraries

I am totally lost.

I’ve used Kicad in the past but its been a while. When I used it last I seemed to have access to libraries that came with Kicad.

I downloaded a version in December for a quick mod and it worked fine, but I didn’t have to place new parts or make part changes. But today I need to change some parts and footprints. Where I used to see symbol libraries and footprint libraries. I can’t find them where I used to see them.

I could use some guidance in learning how the library system has changed.

I’m running 5.99.0-7833-g0d57f90982 on Windows 10.

I think I got it to work! Details to follow.

I went to the project window. Preferences. Manage Symbol libraries.

In that window I went to the Global tab. I unchecked every library.

I picked the Diodes library because diodes are common. I hit the folder icon off to the right and selected the diode library that appeared when it was visible. I noticed that before I did this it was .lib and after I did this it was .kicad_sym.

That still didn’t work.

Then I noticed a column that said “legacy”. I clicked and found a pulldown. I selected “kicad” instead of “legacy”. I hit “OK”.

When I went back to the schematic I had a diodes library again!

So I think I’ve figured this out on my own.

That’s great! Thank you for it writing down here in case I, or somebody else, gets stuck in the same situation.
