Can't add a track to a via?

Sorry for all the questions, I am learning this all from scratch! Everyone here has been very helpful so far!

I need to run a track between 2 surface mounded pads and to do it, I need to run the track on the back side of the board, so I assume I drop a couple of vias and use these to ‘get’ the track from the front, to the back and then back to the front again.

The track placement tool will let me start at a via but won’t let me end at another via?

I am obviously missing something!

Is this existing vias? You can only link that which is the same net

The typical workflow is to track away from the pad, press v for a via, track on the new layer, press v for a via and terminate at the pad.

Got you. I was trying to place vias then link them with tracks.

I see now that I should place the track and add vias as I go, pressing ‘v’ to add them.

It works great.

Thanks.

Correct, start with the trace then add the vias. “V” key

If you want to place the via first; You can assign a net name to a via and then it will work. (edit the via)
…I usually do not edit the via but place it on a piece of copper that has the right net name. This assigns the net name. Then I move the via to the new place.
…Often I need a series of vias with the same name. Once I have one, then just copy it.

I use ‘Place Via’ for via stitching. When you place via on GND zone via automatically gets GND net.

If you have a trace where you know there will be multiple branches along the way (like an address or data bus going to several ICs), it works best to place the trace to near where the first branch is needed, drop the via, change back to the layer you were previously on, and repeat as needed until the main track is finished, then you can go back and place the branch tracks.
