For example I have never tried to update PCB when in schematic I would not have footprints assigned. May be PCB not allow to ‘update pcb from schematic’ in such case.
You are probably running the schematic editor in Standalone Mode. And in standalone mode, there is no connection between your schematic and the PCB, and thus, updating also does not work. You need to create a project first, and then start the schematic editor from the project manager.
In addition:
The PCB editor is always empty when you first start it. You need to draw the PCB yourself too. The simplest way is to draw a graphic rectangle on the Edge.Cuts layer.
Hi Thanks for your comments. I am back up and running. I decieded to install Kicad as new, after backing up all projects. Must be something I had done ??
Everything is working fine, except…
1 - I cannot now draw a rectangle on the pcb editor. I have used the pull down menu and the RH menu.
All I get is the below image (a purple rectangle), which basically does nothing.
2 - I have to use the draw a line, which can result in split lines, as image below. This split rectangle has been made into a polygon, by using ‘create from selction’ ‘convert into polygon’. But I cannot create a polyline that is closed. Any ideas please.
Right bottom you have Selection Filter. If because of it elements you try to select can’t be selected than your selection rectangle really does nothing.
I have seen such picture only when editing zone. But I am still in V8 and may be have not seen some new features.
To draw a rectangle, select the tool. Click the mouse button at one corner. Move the cursor to the opposite corner. Click the mouse button again. Done.
Dragging the mouse with button pressed is used for multiple selection.
