Can anyone please help me create a step file from a KiCad file?

Hello all, I have two different KiCAD files of a PCB design, where I need to get the STEP file made from these. Is there anybody that can help me creating this step file? Personally, I am not a KiCAD user and have no idea on how to do it myself.

Open the PCB editor and go to file - Export. There you will find many exports and among of them is STEP. You have several options on what to export and how to export. This depends on your needs. But start with the default and tune from there.

Thanks for the feedback - still I’m not a KiCAD user, I don’t even have KiCAD installed, just got the files…

Kicad is free and your task doesn’t require any special skills. Just follow the steps above. There is also a Jobs channel on discord where you can make an offer and look for someone to do it for you. I am sure it would be easy to find someone.

Here you can find the basic documentation: https://docs.kicad.org/

Here more about exporting files: PCB Editor | 9.0 | English | Documentation | KiCad

Bearing this in mind it may well be your best approach to find what version of KiCad these files were created in and use that major version’s latest revision to open the files.

For example, if created in V7 use V7.0.11

Additionally, if you are expecting your STEP file to have all the component 3D models this will only be the case for components included in KiCad that come with STEP file 3D CAD, up until recently the 3D component CAD could not be made part of the KiCad files.

If you don’t want to invest the time to install kicad and export the files yourself (which I fully understand, if this is a one-time-task.):

  • invest 15minutes to read the “new user” article in the FAQ and follow the instructions to promote yourself from “new user” to “basic user”: New Member Information
  • then you are able to attach the kicad files in this thread
  • if you again ask nicely then maybe someone spends 5 minutes from their time to convert into a step file
  • note that most of the user-defined footprint models will be absent in nthis 3D-file, as these depend on the kicad installation (see answer from raptor)

or as @lucas recomended, join the Kicad Discord channel (several of us are there). One of us will be able to help.
