I have a related problem with Trend AV quietly sabotaging installing KiCad if I try to overwrite an existing version, without uninstalling the old one first.
Basically antivirus software seems to clash with opensource software far too often, due to malware frequently using the same installer toolkits

Yes! Since KiCad saves its data in text files, version control is cheap and will save you many worries.

Use git https://git-scm.com/ (my favorite) or something else.
