I’m having trouble aligning two switches in KiCad without inadvertently selecting the nearby resistors. I’ve tried using the alignment tools, but they seem to affect all the components in the selection area. Is there a way to align only the switches without selecting the surrounding resistors?

After first selection you can modify it.
Try Shift+Click, Ctrl+Click and may be Ctrl+Shift+Click.
Also Shif+Drag and Ctrl+Drag should have some effects (of course different for drag to the right and drag to the left). Just try.
If you want to have selected only 2 footprints then select first by clicking it and then select second by Ctrl+click on it.
