Microsoft Windows 11 Version 22H2 (OS Build 22621.5909)
KiCad Version 9.0.4, release build.
The KiCad default height for PinSocket_1×05_P2.54mm_Vertical.step is 8.5mm, but I want to use a 5mm height female header, if I scale the Z value to 0.5880 under Footprint Properties, will PCB Manufacturer understand that I am using a 5mm female pin header ?
I understand, aside writing information in the footprint properties > Description value for BOM creation later, anyone experience in creating a 5mm height female pin header in KiCad before ?
I did found the physical female pin header component at 5mm height in AliExpress, but failed to find any footprint or 3D model that with 5mm height for KiCad, I don’t want to solder myself, just let the PCB manufacturer assembly everthing.
This information is contained in your BOM (Bill of Materials) for the header the BOM usually contains the component reference, the footprint, the description, the part number, the manufacturer, sometimes supplier references, etc.
Then the PCBA manufacturer will know exactly which parts they need to fit . . . if you have surface mount components you also need to include the Component Placement files (Pick and Place).
It is not important where you found element. The important is its manufacturer and type and if it exists in your manufacturer supply chain. Do he orders elements at AliExpress?
You can also edit these in groups, so if for example you have 20 identical 100k 0603 resistors you can change their properties in one go using the Symbol Fields Table . . .
I am using external spreadsheet to generate my BOM. It is because I was doing it that way ‘since always’ (=90s) and just adopted it to KiCad (V4/V5 those time).
I’m not sure if database was added to KiCad V6 or V7. I have never tried this features and don’t plan but as I understand it is among others intended to sypply users with generating BOMs.
In past I was asked about my solution so I have described it in detail and also posted example files. If you are interested I can give here the links, but I suppose you will rather use what KiCad itself offers.
For 5mm headers (or any other of these type headers), go to Samtec’s website– they are an INCREDIBLE resource and very helpful. It takes a little time to figure out their nomenclature, but once you do, they have autobuilt models for all of their parts.
For my case, i found their CES series was a match for my 5mm Adafruit Feather connectors. They use SnapMagic as their CAD engine for symbols, footprints, and 3D models and i’ve had no problems with KiCAD or Fusion360 using them. CES - .100" Closed Entry Low Profile Socket Strip
They even have a picture search option.
