I have noticed that turning on or off layers or features is recently taking several seconds for each change for a moderate size board on Ubuntu 16.04 on a powerful machine.
The same board on a laptop running 4.0.4 is almost instant to change visibility
Anyone else with similar?
I have noticed as well, it’s been happening in the nightly for a while now. I also (unfortunately) mostly use stable though.
OK, I had a quick browse of Launchpad and couldn’t see anything so I will raise a bug report later
If you want, link it here, and I’ll chime in and see about finding the first nightly build where this showed up.

I have just tried on an even faster PC and timed 20 seconds to respond to a change in visibility

I noticed that delay on OpenGL, but not Legacy canvas. (Or perhaps not so severe on Legacy that it caught my attention.) One time over the past weekend my machine (running KiCAD under Win7/64) locked up and I couldn’t even get to Task Mangler, but I had some downloads and a bunch of other stuff running at the time so KiCAD may not have been at fault.

Occasionally I have had KiCAD freeze for about 10-20 seconds when switching to OpenGL canvas but changing visibility of layers is quite responsive in both default and OpenGL. I can toggle the visibility of a layer as quickly as I can click the most button and the layer will appear and disappear about 5 times per second. (Windows 7/64).
I should add that I am using 4.0.1.
The bug is confirmed. It only affects the Ubuntu PPA builds, NOT the Windows ones

There is now a fix committed. Just have to wait for the PPA to catch up
