3D outline in footprint?

I can add a 3D .STEP file to my footprint. That’s fine.

However, I can’t seem to find a way to put the “outline” or “projection” of that 3D model down onto the board other than drawing it painstakingly by hand. Am I missing something, or is this just not implemented?

(The equivalent to this in Altium, for example, is that the 3D model gets put on a layer and that layer has a bounding box from the 3D model which gets projected to the board.)

Site note: You can’t search for “3D” via the search bar. The term is “too short”. Could someone manually exempt that term as it’s really useful?

Thanks.

@buzmeg
that is a nice feature to be added to a wish list…
ATM you can create a 2D i.e. dxf projection of your model in a 3D CAD and import it in your footprint
or you can use kicad StepUp (this is an old video with the old Gui)

Am I missing something?

No

or is this just not implemented?

This. Sounds useful for footprint-generation.

If you don’t care about STEP export, you can use a generic 1mm cube / cylinder model and use the KiCad 3D Viewer scale capabilities to adjust it for your proposes. Have a look on this post/thread:
