I can add a 3D .STEP file to my footprint. That’s fine.
However, I can’t seem to find a way to put the “outline” or “projection” of that 3D model down onto the board other than drawing it painstakingly by hand. Am I missing something, or is this just not implemented?
(The equivalent to this in Altium, for example, is that the 3D model gets put on a layer and that layer has a bounding box from the 3D model which gets projected to the board.)
Site note: You can’t search for “3D” via the search bar. The term is “too short”. Could someone manually exempt that term as it’s really useful?

that is a nice feature to be added to a wish list…
ATM you can create a 2D i.e. dxf projection of your model in a 3D CAD and import it in your footprint
or you can use kicad StepUp (this is an old video with the old Gui)
If you don’t care about STEP export, you can use a generic 1mm cube / cylinder model and use the KiCad 3D Viewer scale capabilities to adjust it for your proposes. Have a look on this post/thread:
