Usage Pad Type "Connector"

Guys,

Is there any situation to use the “pad type connector” than to use the “pad type SMD”?
The difference I see is the solder paste layer is by default disabled for the “pad type connector”.
I can only image the situation of a fiducial. Other than that, what is the use of choosing this type of pad?

It’s for edge connectors mainly. Like you’d get on PCI cards and the like. I’ve used it once on a Sinclair Spectrum add-on card I designed.

Ditto, I’ve seen it used for card edge connectors too.

But, that can be achieved using SMD pads on both side (front and back)? No?

It can, but you have to turn off the paste layer if you use a normal SMT pad (you don’t want paste on your edge connectors!) so there’s a different pad type for it.

OK. Im a bit new to this but a “pad type connector” is exactly what I want for a small board that’ll have a couple of discrete wires from the outside world soldered to it.

I see a “test point” and a 1x1 connector that would theoretically be usable, but is there a convention for a just plain “pad type connector” component?
