Will I be able to save my nightly 8.99 project into a stable 9.0 project when it comes out.
I’ve accidentally bitten off more than I can chew with nightly and have a very important project stuck in nightly. There are very few issues but there are enough for it to be a headache. I know you can’t save backwards to version 7.
When 9.0 comes out, will i be able to save the nightly project into the stable version?
8.99 has already transitioned to using 9.0-based version numbers as we are past the first release candidate for 9.0. (The second release candidate should come this weekend, by the way). You can open and save your 8.99 files in any current nightly. If you experience issues opening your files, that’s a serious bug, please report it.
Thanks,
I’ve mostly just had a few crashes regarding the creepage DRC checks. I’m on a team so we haven’t updated nightly since last year to try and match versions for collaboration. There really are minimal issues, I was mostly worried about this long term project being stuck in nightly forever.
phew
I’ll come back and mark as a solution once we’ve moved over.
I would really recommend not waiting for 9.0 stable and then moving, if you are on an old nightly.
You should test the latest nightly, or RC2 when it comes out. That way if you find any problems with your team, you have a chance of getting them fixed before the stable release.
One detail - when you first start a 9.0 RC, it will ask if you want to migrate your settings. If you have been using 8.99, you probably want to select the “Import settings from a previous version” radio button, and optionally use the pull-down menu to choose the 8.99 settings rather than letting KiCad start with the default settings.
That way you won’t lose any customizations that you might have done in 8.99.
I have never been using nightly so don’t believe me 100%.
Your 8.99 project should have no problem to became V9.0.0 stable project.
But if you have issues in 8.99 and no one will report them than you probably will have them also in V9.0.0. First stable releases of new version typically have some issues so may be 9.0.3 will have most frequent issues fixed.
It is in your best interest to use V9 rc.1 as soon as possible to check if your issues are there and report them giving you a chance to not have them in 9.0.0.
I fixed a sneaky little multithreading bug in the creepage checks which was causing indeterminate crashing, but this was a day after we released rc-1. If you do find crashes, please do report them (and if you use Windows, if you are able to, you can enable anonymous reporting so we can see crash reports). Bug reports for crashes are taken very seriously.
