Indeed I agree, improvements with the library structure using links from component to footprints and from component to symbol instead the fix 1:1 structure with or without inheritance could boost Kicads possiblities. On the other hand, there is the question how on many users understand and use such sophisticated flexible library functÃons and how many would suffer from the complexity of its use.
