This will be great. Just when I thought I wouldn’t be more impressed.
I had run some tests last week in V5 after having used V7 for a few months. Going back really made me appreciate the work that was put in to improve V5 to V7. I can’t wait to see the stable build of the upcoming version.
Thank you to the developer(s). Keep up the great work!
Are you writing to us from some point in time in the past?
The current stable version is 8.0.6 (8.0.7 soon).
Should I understand that you decided to ignore V8 and are just waiting for upcoming V9?
When you have written that you had to unmask 20 tracks and for my proposition to just use polygon you have written than with zone you just hit b and it is done I understood that zone knows how to unmask only tracks while proposed by me polygon don’t knows that. But now (being at PC with KiCad) I have checked and I see that zone (like polygon) don’t knows how to unmask only tracks.
For me only difference is that using polygon when you edit its shape everything is updated at once but with zone when you edit its shape it is unfilled and you have to press b once more to have it being filled.
For me polygon in this task is simply simpler to use.
Yes. -----------------
I have checked it with Create Zone from Selection and Create Polygon from Selection and both work well to unmask only tracks.
If I were needing it I would certainly use polygon and not zone as I think polygon is simpler object for KiCad to process.
May be I just don’t know what advantages zone can have over polygon.
I am under the impression that a polygon, or any other shape for that matter, will require a separate polygon or other shape for each area. Picture there being twenty tracks side by side and you want to unmask every other one, it would take ten different polygons or other shapes? If that is true I’m not sure that method would help to speed things along. As I have said in the past, I am far from any expert but any tips on the fearures are always appreciated. I have completed my projects layout but will give it a try on the next one.
Pitor,
Welcome to the twilight zone. …
Nice to hear that there is a stable version over V7. I had no idea that there was a newer stable version. I run two businesses right now and haven’t had time to research it. Seeing that it looks like V9 is around the corner I will probably upgrade when it comes along. I am still learning on 7 and don’t want to confuse myself. Also, if any problems arise while installing an upgraded version I simply don’t have the time to work them out. Right now its, “if it ain’t broke dont fix it”. Also, the project that I am working on currently needs to be completed as soon as possible and I’m still on a learning curve. Again, I am afraid of running into time consuming troubles while upgrading. V7 is currently doing the job very well for me. As I learn more and my projects become more complicated I think an upgrade may help. Again, I appreciate everyones help here. I couldn’t have gotten as far as I have without it.
It’s OK to stick with KiCad V7 for now. The difference between V5 and V6 was significant, but after V6 the differences became more gradual. It’s mostly some new features you’re missing out on.
An overview of the changes can be found in:
A Cross Platform and Open Source Electronics Design Automation Suite
Quite a lot of people who prefer stability above new features are one mayor version behind. When a new mayor version is released (expected in the first few months of each year) it tends to have quite a lot of minor bugs, and they get fixed in the bug fix updates (releases approximately once a month).
Seeing that it looks like V9 is around the corner I will probably upgrade when it comes along.
At the moment when V9 comes along rationale for you will be to upgrade to latest V8 version as first release of V9 will be buggy, I think.
Or skip V8 but wait till 9.0.3 or 9.0.4 to upgrade to V9.
I am under the impression that a polygon, or any other shape for that matter, will require a separate polygon or other shape for each area.
I don’t understand what you are trying to say.
As you want to unmask several separate areas than what unusual in needing for it separate shapes on the mask layer?
it would take ten different polygons or other shapes? If that is true I’m not sure that method would help to speed things along.
You select all tracks you need to unmask and generate the copy of them at mask layer in one move.
Nice to hear that there is a stable version over V7.
You didn’t said which V7 version you use. If not 7.0.11 than it is not the best approach as each last number change means several tens bugs fixed.
Upgrading when last number changes has practically 0 risk provided you are not doing it in first few days after it was released.
Thank you very much, that was partially my reasoning. Its nice to know that there are no huge advancements that I am missing out on. I also feel that seeing I have been having such great results with V7 that it may be a little less complicated to learn on. After I am more proficient upgrading will be more of just adding new features on a program that I already understand. That should make my learning a little more gradual and simpler.
Pitor,
I just checked, I’m happy to say that I’m on 7.0.1. So far everything has been 99.9% stable.
I’m happy to say that I’m on 7.0.1
That is not so good. V7.0.1 is near the beginning. V7.0.11 has some 700 or so bugs fixed. If you want to stick with an older version, then always use the latest bug fix release (third number) of that mayor version.
Okay, I will check for it before starting my next project. I appreciate the help.
With last digit change I upgrade during projects. It takes a minute or two to download it and a minute to install (and ‘in case’ you always can go back). I do it about a week after it was released as it happened that there were bugs that resulted in next release in few days (such bugs are found very quickly).
It happened me (and other people here) not only once that reported bug was fixed even the same day so next day (or next-next day) Test version had it fixed. Few times just to have program without found by me bug I was using Test versions (Test versions are day after day versions between stable releases).
7.0.11 is the less buggy V7 release ever. If there are some bugs they will not be fixed as now bugs are fixed only in V8.
I was never using 7.0.1 as to avoid serious bugs I skip few first releases of each main number version. So I moved from V6 to V7 when it was 7.0.3 I suppose and since V8 reached 8.0.3 I use V8.
V8 allowed me to design RFID antenna in the way it was not possible in V7 (I suppose) or V6 (I’m sure). V8 also allowed me (compared to V7) to make my BOMs easier/faster.
