Requesting advice on migration from KiCad V4 to V8

Hi paulvdh,
Thanks a lot for going through all the efforts in your attempt to help me.
Let me give you a brief summary of my experience as follows…

I started from step 9 in your message, entered “new library references” for individual symbols and clicked “Update symbol fields from new library”. But unfortunately to no avail.

As an experiment, I created a new library in the “Symbols Editor” and copied all my old Symbols from the so called “-rescue” libs into the newly created library.
Deleted all symbols in the “-rescue” libraries. And, though I have a few empty “-rescue” libraries I don’t really care. I have now all my old symbols in one place in a new library whose location is known to me, :grinning:

Actually, in a way, what I did above is nearly similar to what you have described in step 10 of your message. Of course, the process in step 10 is more elegant. Here, KiCad would probably get rid of the empty libraries after export.

Now, as this symbols problem seems to be solved, I would consider the migration fron V4.x to V8.0.6 as successfully completed.

Thanks for your suggestions, These were great help.
Best regards

You probably would have been better off with step 10:

It does all symbols in your schematic in one go, so you don’t forget any, and it also has the ability to update the links (as I also mentioned). After this step you can simply delete the old “rescue” library, and it’s entry in the library table, because it is not used anymore.
