On-ramp for trying out Kicad 6.99?

@craftyjon and everyone else :slight_smile:

There are probably about three places on the website where it would greatly aid navigation and understanding to replace “nightlies” with “6.99 nightlies”. Or maybe even “6.99 development nightlies”.

This way it’s clear that the version is 6.99, and it’s a nightly build (and it’s under development). It would also make clear which version the nightlies are for. Currently, page:

https://downloads.kicad.org/kicad/windows/explore/nightlies

… for example, makes no mention of version.

When the nightlies change to being for 7.99. that would be about three places where one character needs to be changed on the website. Not a big task for whoever looks after the site, and a whole lot easier than trying to get people to stop calling the nightlies “6.99”.

I still favor having an actual official page “About nightly developer releases of the next version X.99”, a central place to tell users not to use it other than for testing, there’s no support for it, where to get it, how to install it safely, where to follow developments, where to discuss it, and so on.

No info page exists because the intention has been to
avoid making it too easy for people to start using it for
production designs when it’s a unstable build for the majority of the year

I get the intent. But then we have this from 10 days before my post:

Youtube: 2022 End-of-year Recap!

Seth Hillbrand 33:31 “… so please please please go to the download site try out one of the nightly builds give it a run and see if you can find anything that needs to be fixed”

… for which it would be good if participants had actually started trying out 6.99 a bit ahead of January (like November or December) so that they had a chance to learn the new features, and maybe track areas of particular interest and so on.

Yes those users need to understand that it’s a work in progress, and again, it’s not for production. But given it’s not for production, those users need to find time to fit “playing with K6.99” in between their regular jobs, and not have it be a panic at the last minute in January.

Anyhow, just my 2 cents. K7 is going to be a step forward. (And I’m looking forward to trying the CLI!)

I’d take Seth Hillbrands comment as “well, 7.0.0 is nearly ready. Anyone with the time, energy and inclination please give it a thrashing so hopefully 7.0.1 doesn’t have to be published a week later.”

Playing with the nightlies is for those with the time (and experience). It is a way of contributing to the project. If you are busy with regular work, so be it. If you are a bit bored and can’t kick the habit of PCB design even after 40 years, now is a good excuse to continue.

There were a couple of commits to do with routing in todays 30th December build, so worth some careful checking.
So far so good for me
