Yes, there is a nice editor that is easy-to-use and is programmable. It works from the shell. It is called ne (nice editor). When I want a GUI editor, I use kate because my desktop environment is KDE.
Once I made a card with alphabet on it (with letters printed also on it) and the second with text “MERRY CHRISTMAS” but without printed letters then put both into an envelope and sent to my friend.
He had nothing to do with electronics or computers and as I found out later, he failed to decode this letter
