I created both a symbol and footprint library in the ‘kicad public’ area on my macbook. I would like to copy this library to another system. Where are these libraries stored on a mac?

I’m not familiar with Mac, but I think you may have not created your personal libraries correctly.
Personal Libraries should be found wherever you placed them.
It would be worth your while to read through this FAQ guide to see if it compares to your method for creating Personal Libraries.
Check in your Documents folder for a KiCad folder
