I haven’t tried it myself so am not sure. It just seems computationally expensive.

Yes and no. As you surmised it’s too expensive to run two-item (A,B) clearance rules, but it will take single item (A) clearance rules into account. (Or at least that’s what I think it does.)
It doesn’t handle track-width or track-length rules at all at present.
