If there are critical bugs before 5.1, there could be a 5.0.3. But once 5.1 is released, we won’t have the time to maintain three (5.0, 5.1, 6.0) branches. So bug fixes will only go to 5.1 at that point.
It also helps us to have a clear policy when we encourage people to upgrade to the latest/greatest. I don’t think any of us care to be version aficionados when it comes to answering questions. "Oh, that was a great little version with great complexity and nuance. It was released around the time of FOSDEM 2019 and you can just feel the developers exuberance in the code. "
Therefore, once a new release is created, the only patches that will be made to the stable release branch will be for bugs that cause KiCad to crash or possible corruption and/or loss of data. No other changes from the current development branch will be backported to the last stable release by the project.
I’ve asked the question about the availability of 5.0.2 for macOS multiple times on the users mailing list and never received any replies. Is the users mailing list dead or are there just no Mac users/devs reading it?
Us Mac users just want an update on the status.
Is the 5.0.2 build uploaded to the testing area ok or are there some issues with it?
I got the feeling from the mailing list https://lists.launchpad.net/kicad-developers/msg38636.html
that the downloads from the ‘testing’ repository - http://downloads.kicad.org/osx/testing/ could be considered the ‘stable’ 5.0.2 & ready for release. I have had this version running for a few days on my my MacBook without issue but it crashes reliably whenever activating 3d views on my 27" iMac (both running 10.13, HighSierra).
The Kicad-EDA website is still only showing 5.0.1 on the main MacOS download page - so, like you I am not sure if there is still an issue with 5.0.2 on the Mac - judging from my limited experience, there might be some ongoing problems but that might just be my setup.
I will do a bug report on the 5.0.2 issue if it hasn’t been reported already.
Notwithstanding, I have also just tried out a new nightly which runs fine on the iMac - but I think the eeschema canvas needs a bit more work - it seems very blocky and jumpy to me.
