Will KiCad offer a cloud-based application?

Is it true that Kicad will work only with cloud soon and not as standalone tool?

No. Where did you get that idea?

No.

KiCad developers have no desire to work on cloud anything. There are some third parties piggybacking off KiCad’s file formats to create online tools, but they are not related to the core kicad project.

I’d personally appreciate it if you could point to where you got this misconception from.

Bearing in mind that KiCad is freeware . . . who would be paying for the huge data centre to support such an idea ?

I guess it could be the ā€˜take it private’ ā€œfreeware scamā€ theory.

I’m unsure if your question will serve any useful purpose or provide the help I need. That’s why I’m asking here—to clarify my doubts and seek assistance.

Actually, the answer will provide more than you realize if you care to share as to where you heard this.

We would like to know because it may benefit KiCad if we can cut the wings of such rumors in their nest.

You already got the clear answer – do you still need other kind of help or did you doubt the answer?

How many know about those ā€œYour Computer is Infected SCAN NOW!ā€ look-alike redirects?
Good way to start one and get paid for drumming up online no-see-um repairs.

Typing ā€œKicad cloud basedā€ into Google gives three results. All asking if Kicad will possibly be cloud based sometime in the future.
Two results are in this forum. One in 2024, the other 2023, and one in EEvblog March 2023.
All gave negative replies.

Would be pretty funny if it’s an AI asking for a question it received.

Given how defensive that response is

It’s actually kind of surprising nobody made a pre-LLM ā€œresearch assistant AIā€ that spammed stackoverflow etc…

Actually the title and the content pose slightly different questions due to the word only. If OP understood the GPL they would know that the latter isn’t possible.

Thanks, Actually we were using Eagle before and they decided to go cloud based so we decided to find other alternates and while exploring someone raise this point i thought it’s better to ask this question at right place. Many thanks now i am pretty confident that was a false alarm.

Closing this thread now as there is nothing useful to add
