How to recover from crash after editing footprint

I’ve never used this feature before, always making/modifying components directly through their editors.

Yes, it doesn’t actually “save” in the same meaning of the word, it only updates the edited footprint to the board design without saving it. The confusing part is to re-use the “Save” function to do that.

I suppose it should be renamed “update”.

But:

There is a big yellow sign warning update only.
There are “save” prompts when closing both the FP editor and the PCB editor.
The user experiencing the problem was using a very old version of Kicad that crashed before the PCB editor “save” could be used. This crashing may well have been a “long ago” fixed bug; as following the same work method as the OP in 6.0.0 no longer causes freezing followed by a crash.
