In the thread linked to by Kaunas, I also posted such an experiment. It seemed to work quite well back then, but that may have changed in a newer KiCad version.

Hierarchical PCB generation

In 2019 I did an experiment that seemed to work, but I never explored it beyond the experimental stage. I made several independent KiCad projects in the same directory, (One for each PCB), And then I made a “master project” and added the schematics of the “sub projects” as hierarchical sheets in the “master project”.
