How can find the right housings

Hi there,

I am pretty new to KiCAD and although I really like it I am struggeling trying to find the housings and possibly their 3D-Part. As an example: I am looking for IR transistor IRFR7440PbF which has D-Pak housing. Which strategy should I use where can I find it or find out that it does not exists yet?
I also encountered trouble to download footprints from “http://library.oshec.org/” by downloading .mod files. They did not open in KiCAD.

My best advice is to create your own footprint. Please have a look at:

You can try find your D-Pak in some 3D library of kicad
eg:
http://smisioto.no-ip.org/elettronica/kicad/kicad-en.htm

Or you can also search for a step model (eg: 3dcontentcentral) and learn how to use StepUp tool by @maui
