Hello, I have created new footprints. These are also found in the specific project, but when I call up the footprint editor regardless of the project, it searches for a long time and then produces an error message.
How (in which path) do I have to store new footprints so that they can be found globally in the editor?
Thanks. Joachim
OS? Version? blablablabla
Thank you ML9104 very much for your friendly and competent help. Thanks to the detailed explanations, I now know exactly how to save new footprints.
Joachim
Herzlichen Dank ML9104 für die freundliche und kompetente Hilfe. Durch die tiefgreifenden Erklärungen weiß ich nun genau, wie ich neue Footprints speichern muss.
Joachim
he wants to know the KiCad version and on which OS you are - otherwise it is hard to help.
Go there and then copy the version info:
So you found answers somewhere and… No more questions.
I think it was sarcasm and achim was complaining that ML only asked for the OS and version and didn’t help
That’s exactly how it is. I’m asking about KiCad’s storage principle, which is the Win10 operating system and KiCad version 8.0.0 is probably unimportant.
Joachim
Genau so ist es. Ich frage nach dem Speicherprinzip von KiCad, das ist das Betriebssystem Win10 und die KiCad-Version 8.0.0 wohl unwichtig.
Joachim
Please post the error you get. But afaik there are no limitations to the folder, you can put it anywhere. I have my extra footprints in the documents folder inside a git repository
This probably sounded bad to the OP when the reality it was just meant to fulfill the 20 character minimum post requirement.
Can be very important. Each last version number change means tens bugs fixed. I even didn’t installed 8.0.0. I preferred using mostly bugs free 7.0.11 than certainly buggy 8.0.0. I made my move V7 to V8 when 8.0.3 was released.
Between 8.0.0 and 8.0.8 a few hundred bugs were fixed.
You are saying that you get Error but didn’t even said what Error text is. Where from do you know that you just didn’t found one of already fixed bugs?
If you identify Error may be someone who reported it several month ago will just tell you that since 8.0.6 it is fixed.
I’m trying to help, but your imprecise/incomplete question makes it very hard.
The “blablabla” part was to get up to 20 characters, not to make fun.
Generally, always provide as much info as you can when asking. The smartphone “point-and-shoot” style works very badly on technical forums.
Every OS has it’s own storage point, there’s a world outside Microsoft.
You should set up personal libraries, explained in jmk’s FAQ:
then they will be availble to all your projects. Best to store them somewhere under your user directory in Windows.
Hello @achim1152
If you have any problems understanding the FAQ, please ask here.
Also, once you have mastered the “Beginners Guide” FAQ there is another FAQ written by “blablabla” about personal library manipulation that may be of use.
If blablablabla had used a few more words like: Please post your OS and KiCad version for better help, it would have been > 20 chars, there would not be suspicion of snarkiness, and we would not have had the extra exchanges. Own goal.
The real solution is to get rid of the 20 char for regular users. Well, reduce it at least. I think you can now do it separately for new and ‘other’ members. This is a case where after the fact we saw the filler was simply taken wrong.
