Ok, I finally found it. Thank you. Note on the Mac there are two preferences menus both labeled the same thing.
Using the one under Kicad I now see what I needed to check. But this menu does look different than what was posted as it appears to be limited just to foot print editor options.
That’s what Rene said - you have to have a KiCad subapplication (pcbnew, fp editor, eeschema, symbol editor) open to see the corresponding Preferenced dialog pages. And that’s a bit weird.
The point in finding the Magnetic pads option was that in the left hand navigation tree “Footprint Editor” is a page, not just a top level parent name. You have to click “Footprint Editor” to see these options. Compare your last screenshot with this (from your earlier screenshot):
This has caused problems to users and has been changed in the development version so that there’s no top level page but only sibling pages.
