Dear all, I am working with my kids on designing a wireless keyboard for iPhone. We have made very good progress based on what is available online. We now need to put everything together and send Gerber files, BOM, footprints to the PCB manufacturer. We don’t have any Kicad training and are looking for a freelancer who would be willing to work with us on finalizing this project. Please reach out to me in case you are interested to help. Many thanks - Alex
Let me suggest you…
Read and follow Getting Started manual and then decide if you really need someone to design your PCB for you.
Have in mind that whenever you came here with specific KiCad question (like: I want to do this or this and don’t know how to do it) you will always get helpful answer.
More general PCB design questions (those that do not depend on the program you use) better ask at other forums (like EEVBlog for example).
I understood that they need help for only “finalizing”, i.e. exporting the gerbers etc. and maybe the final checks. Alex, if so, you may get lucky by attaching the project here (see New Member Information if you don’t have privileges to do that). Maybe someone is curious and helpful enough to look at it and comment. We rather give public feedback than private guidance, although anyone is free to contact you through a PM (private message).
In any case you should ask more focused questions. If they are about the finalizing and checking a PCB in general (in any EDA software), then as Piotr said they don’t belong here, you can find some pointers in Off-topic post closure.
I’m having difficulty imagining your situation.
So was the schematic and layout done in KiCad at all?
So were you thinking KiCad is some kind of “finalizer” that will generate those outputs for you from any EDA software?
Do you look to hire somebody or you hope to get free guidance? Nothing wrong with the latter but just saying that freelancer comes with certain connotations.
In case you did do the design right through to the PCB layout in KiCad, then many PCB fabs provide guides on how to generate the required output files. (Gerbers and BOM are outputs but footprints is not an output, so not sure you included that.)
But I suspect one or more of the following: 1. You did not design the project in KiCad, which makes it an off-topic question for this forum, 2. You need to delve into how to order/purchase parts for assembly, and depending on the decisions you make, this may propagate back to the circuit design phase.
I understood that they may be have something working connected “for a spider” and want to “put everything together” but as “We don’t have any Kicad training” they just need to learn KiCad from scratch.
Hi Alex,
May i strongly suggest {respectively} that you go the next stage and do it yourself.
Kicad is not that difficult the ‘knock up’ a basic PCB. Presumably you have a schematic ready other wise you wouldn’t ask for freelancers. Just pluck upcourage and go for the next step and embark on entering your circuit I!to KiCAD.
You’ll find great help here if you need (non electronic) help .
I thought this forum was for help with KiCad issues and not for hiring freelancers… ![]()
It’s not wrong to ask, but reception has traditionally been unenthusiastic.
It would be better if people would now wait for the response from the OP rather than speculate and give negative comments.
Thank you, Piotr, will go through.
My interpretation is they may have built some prototype on a breadboard (maybe only with a few keys) and are now looking to build a full-size keyboard in KiCad.
Yes, me too.
There are already quite a lot of keyboard designs in KiCad “out there”. for example on github. There are also scripts that can help with keyboard layout / design. kicad keyboard generator at DuckDuckGo The name I was looking for here was ergogen. This scripting can save you time, but it’s also an “advanced topic” that can suck up much more time to learn then it can save to do it manually. Whether such an approach makes sense for you and your kids is difficult to judge, but my gut tells me it’s probably too much for a first design in KiCad.
Where did I give a negative comment? I am only questioning if this is the right place to ask for help on a project since, to my knowlesge, the nature of this forum is to assist with KiCad issues. There is to my opinion nothing negative about it. But it should be clear to what the purplose is of this forum. That’s all.
