I am working on a Mac platform running OS13.7.4. Previously I have been using KiCad V7.0.9 with no difficulties. I just downloaded V9. The scrollbars are extremely sensitive, such that it is impossible to do any actual work. I have scoured the KiCad settings looking for some control over the scrollbars, but not found anything. I have done internet searches, and found some similar complaints, but no solutions.
Not sure how to collect a video. Let me try to explain. Running the Schematic Editor, the screen size of my drawing sheet is 30x22cm including the documentation block in the lower-right-hand corner. The smallest movement I can make with the scrollbars moves the sheet 18cm on the screen.
No. 1 shows the KiCad window with my schematic. Note the red arrow at the bottom, that represents my cursor. I placed that there since screen shots do not capture the position of my cursor. No. 2 shows the window after I clicked once when my cursor was positioned as shown by the red arrow. Note how far the schematic moved. That is the minimum change I can obtain.
I know this is not related to the topic at hand, but I vaguely remember that in previous versions I could group symbols together on a schematic, do I remember correctly and does that function exist in version 9?
I tried making a bug report using Kicad >> Report Bug, but the controlling bot concluded that I did not have complete version information, so the report was not completed. I will admit that I found the user interface very confusing. I decided to just give up on version 9.
Out of curiosity, I thought I would try Kicad version 8. I down loaded V8.09, and to my surprise, I now have workable horizontal and vertical scrollbars. My advice to anyone working on a Mac platform running OS13.7.4, use Kicad version 8.
I may not be much help, since I havenāt used scrollbars for many, many versions. But I did just manage to find the option to turn them on⦠and I agree, they are useless in V9! And Iām on macOS 26.0.1! But I was on macOS 15 until recently.
The smallest I managed to drag them resulted in a very large jump.
I have a vague memory of giving up on them many moons ago, so Iām not sure if anything has changed. But I believe you - if the current behaviour is new, it is indeed worthy of a bug report.
Iām glad you found v8 satisfactory. In case it helps, there was a moment in time when KiCadās mouse/trackpad panning suddenly became really, really good on macOS, and Iāve never looked back. Hereās my current settings. I think from memory the key is the āhorizontal movementā setting - I never use the modifier keys. I now exclusively pan with the Magic Mouse or trackpad, and zoom in and out with hotkeys assigned to ā1ā and ā2ā.
Panning and zooming is so fundamental to enjoyment of an EDA tool, I can understand your frustration!
I can confirm the use of the scrollbar is finicky but if you click just near the little oval ādotā it works better but not really well. And yes, I almost never use these scrollbars⦠but sometimes you need themā¦
Thanks for taking the time to check out this bug. It is difficult to describe the problem in a sentence or two.
I donāt know if it is related or not, but I have worked with a trackball for decades, and ever since Apple started to migrate the user interface for OSX to match iOS gestures, the utility of trackballs has been degraded. It is a particular problem for dragging.
Switching to a mouse or trackpad would be very difficult for me.
