KiCad on Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit

I have upgraded my least critical PC to 16.04 64bit to try it out and have met a few minor?? issues.

The kicad-demo package now clashes with kicad-common, it seems there are files common to both (Coldfire).
Fortunately I don’t need the demos any more, but annoying for a beginner

AMD graphics user are in trouble. Fglrx cannot be used anymore. Radeon works, but is a rather Jurassic OpenGL version

Hi, i’m a new user of both KiCAD and Ubuntu 16.04.

I had installed KiCAD from the Nightly builds PPA everything seems good but and i can’t found the ‘rounded’ pads and the other newer features, somebody else have this behavior or it’s just me?

Thanks in advance

Carlos

I don’t have a PC with 16.04 and Nightly builds yet.
Generally new users are wise to stick to stable releases, you will get quicker help

Which is your kicad version?
That is a necessary info to let people help

Yes, when you are talking about Nightlies, you must detail the build ID, bugs can pop up and vanish in a very short time

This information?

Application: kicad
Version: 4.0.2+dfsg1-stable release build
wxWidgets: Version 3.0.2 (debug,wchar_t,compiler with C++ ABI 1009,GCC 5.3.1,wx containers,compatible with 2.8)
Platform: Linux 4.4.0-21-generic x86_64, 64 bit, Little endian, wxGTK
Boost version: 1.58.0
USE_WX_GRAPHICS_CONTEXT=OFF
USE_WX_OVERLAY=OFF
KICAD_SCRIPTING=ON
KICAD_SCRIPTING_MODULES=ON
KICAD_SCRIPTING_WXPYTHON=ON
USE_FP_LIB_TABLE=HARD_CODED_ON
BUILD_GITHUB_PLUGIN=OFF

those features are not in the stable release, just in dev one… you are using the stable one

Right :confused: , i followed the instructions of how to add the nightly builds ppa:

Nightly Development Builds
sudo add-apt-repository --yes ppa:js-reynaud/ppa-kicad
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kicad

Surely is a mistake of myself. Will try again later today.

Kicad ppa for xenial is wrongly pointing to stable release.

kicad nightly ppa

Check Newer version available

That’s right.
And you can see how it immediately revealed the real problem, which was that you were using the latest stable release.
Unless you really need the new experimental features, stay where you are until you have gained some experience of using KiCad. I don’t like to declare new features confirmed unless they have found their way into a stable release

Hi,
I’m having this same problem with not getting the daily builds after upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 even after adding:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/js-reynaud/ppa-kicad/ubuntu xenial main
I seem to remember that there was a very nice search box in the latest CVPCB, and I’d really like to get it back. What repository can I add to get the daily builds again?

Thanks,

Rob

You are in the correct source repository.
The problem is that while the latest version of kicad nightly is 0.201604300946+6716~44~ubuntu16.04.1, the ppa webpage is wrong and points at kicad 4.0.2+dfsg1-4 (20150314 as a newer version (no GitHub access with that one either)
You have to manually override the ppa default and select the real nightly, I use Synaptic Package Manager, which makes this fairly easy to do

can someone help me how to change these with the kubuntu software manager ‘Discover’ ?

or who can correct this behavior?
if iam looking at https://launchpad.net/~js-reynaud/+archive/ubuntu/ppa-kicad?field.series_filter=xenial
there seems to be the actual builds…

sunny greetings
stefan

In the last hour, this interesting looking build has appeared
4.1.0-alpha+201605021001+6717~44~ubuntu16.04.1
Todays date and the first 4.10 build that I have seen

@davidsrsb so you mean the normal installation of this repository should be enough to get the latest?
the installation i followed was:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:js-reynaud/ppa-kicad

Should be, it looks like the stale link to a 4.0.2 variant has been fixed

jub- some seconds ago my software update completed. :slight_smile:
now i have:

Application: kicad
Version: 4.1.0-alpha+201605021001+6717~44~ubuntu16.04.1-product, release build
Libraries: wxWidgets 3.0.2
           libcurl/7.47.0 OpenSSL/1.0.2g zlib/1.2.8 libidn/1.32 librtmp/2.3
Platform: Linux 4.4.0-21-generic x86_64, 64 bit, Little endian, wxGTK
- Build Info -
wxWidgets: 3.0.2 (wchar_t,wx containers,compatible with 2.8)
Boost: 1.58.0
Curl: 7.47.0
KiCad - Compiler: GCC 5.3.1 with C++ ABI 1009
        Settings: USE_WX_GRAPHICS_CONTEXT=OFF
                  USE_WX_OVERLAY=OFF
                  KICAD_SCRIPTING=ON
                  KICAD_SCRIPTING_MODULES=ON
                  KICAD_SCRIPTING_WXPYTHON=ON
                  USE_FP_LIB_TABLE=HARD_CODED_ON
                  BUILD_GITHUB_PLUGIN=ON

Yes the GitHub access works with this build. The stable ppa is still pointing at the broken 4.0.2
