Kicad 9 - Ubuntu 24.04: Revisited

I tried this evening to install KiCAD 9 on my Ubuntu 24.04 system and got the exact same error. I’m not sure I saw what the actual fix was, or is, so I can get it installed.

What is “the exact same error”?

How did you installed it?

When I first searched for the error, this popped up in the search: Kicad 9 - Ubuntu 24.04
something about libocct-visualization-7.6t64……. I have added the kicad-7.0-releases and the kicad-9.0-releases repositories and tried them both with sudo apt install kicad. Same error with both. I did finally just install KiCAD 9 through the ‘App Center’ (not my preferred choice though).

I use the PPA for V9.0.6 on 24.04 LTS. I think that the libooct-visualisation issue is due to another package clashing, was it FreeCAD?

Very likely FreeCAD. There was even in a past FreeCAD PPA repo compatible with KiCad.

It has old FreeCAD there and it says it’s for 20.04 and KiCAD 7, but @Michelle_Lawson do some investigation as very likely this is the source of the issue.

Well, I did find mention of FreeCAD being a root cause, as some other’s have noted. But this is a fresh Ubuntu build, and I have never used FreeCAD.
